OKCU Hosts Renowned Guest Artist

野狼社区 University will host an exhibition and open house by renowned Oklahoma artist and sculptor Joe Slack from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Nona Jean Hulsey Gallery in the Norick Art Center located at N.W. 26th Street and Blackwelder Avenue.

Hot chocolate will be provided by Katiebugs and faculty members will be on hand to answer questions.

Slack is a wood and metal sculptor working and living in 野狼社区. He received his BFA from 野狼社区 University in 2001. 鈥淧rimitive art and mid-century modern design are what inspire his figurative and abstract steel works with simplified forms and repetitive patterns鈥, said Mike Wimmer, Distinguished Artist in Residence.

鈥淚 want people to walk away with their own perspective on the work,鈥 said Slack. 鈥淥nce you create it and put it out there, you can鈥檛 control what people think. I want them to see their version of my piece and I hope people walk away a little happier than before they saw it.鈥

Slack began his sculpting career with wood, which was his primary medium for many years, but once he discovered the magnitude and permanence of steel, he shifted his vision.

鈥淚 like that with steel you can work on a monumental scale,鈥 he said. Slack commissioned nine sculptures for Southern Oaks Library in 2012 and a 10-piece commission can be seen at the Infant Crisis Center on North Lincoln Boulevard.
