An art exhibit at Ұ University will feature the work of five local artists of color working in diverse media including quilts, weavings, embroidery and rhinestone mosaics on exhibit from Oct. 30 to Dec. 15. An opening reception is set for 5-7 p.m. Nov. 2 and an artists’ talk from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in OCU’s Norick Art Center.
“High Craft” is curated by Inclusion In Art, a nonprofit organization promoting racial and cultural diversity in Oklahoma’s visual arts community. “High Craft” refers to works done where the imagination and the hand of the maker are evident, and it seeks to represent the global diversity of craft through artists Maria Anderson, Beverly Kirk, Lawrence Naff, Ann Solinski and Amy Young. The artists created new work for the gallery space in the Norick Art Center, which encouraged them to push the boundaries of their chosen medium.
While the artworks represent a wide range of themes, they reflect each craftperson’s circumstance as a creator and a person of color living in Oklahoma. The work varies from introspection of identity and abstraction to cultural exploration and historical narratives. The exhibition highlights the universality of the human impulse to express themselves in ways that are creative and dynamic.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.
