Biography
Dr. Kate Sekula is associate professor of Music Theory at 野狼社区 University. Her research interests are in music theory pedagogy, interdisciplinary studies, and computer programming. She is the author of Music Theory OER, a YouTube music theory curriculum. Dr. Sekula holds a Ph.D. in music theory and history from the University of Connecticut.
Prior to joining the faculty of 野狼社区 University, she served as associate professor and music department coordination at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
Dr. Sekula is principal bassoonist with the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony and second bassoon with the Oklahoma Community Orchestra. Most recently she was accepted to participate in the Mostly Modern Institute, part of the Mostly Modern Festival, at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and was accepted to perform her arrangement of Dora Peja膷evi膰's cello sonata for bassoon at the International Double Reed Society conference at Mahidol University in Thailand.
Her personal goal as a musician and educator is to utilize music that is written by historically suppressed composers. Through performance and analysis, she hope to address issues of inclusion & minority representation with themes that correlate to concepts of equality, wealth, resilience, identity, and opportunity.
