Hunt for the Wilderpeople 鈥 Taika Waititi, New Zealand (2016) 101 min.
Following our popular screening of Waititi鈥檚 earlier film Boy comes another of his touching and funny depictions of modern indigenous Maori childhood鈥攐ne that sold out every screening at the 2016 DeadCenter Film Festival. Ricky Baker, on the brink of his teenage years, fancies himself an urban tough and a would-be rapper. In and out of foster homes, he also defies many stereotypes, and he starts to come in to his own when he lands with a quirky couple on a rural property as his last chance before 鈥渏uvie鈥. Circumstances change, however, and he and his foster father end up an odd couple on the run in the bush. The adventure deepens their relationship and helps Ricky find a path towards true home and an alternative version of family. Simultaneously goofy and sincere, it鈥檚 a film that will put us in good spirits before the holiday season. In English.
鈥Wilderpeople embod[ies] what comes naturally to this filmmaker 鈥搘ry and accessible fables about lost souls with every reason to be embittered finding something else to do with their anguish instead.鈥 - Tim Hayes, Sight & Sound
