Feb. 6: Free Screening of 'Persepolis'

Viewing notes for Persepolis

Join us for the continuation of our 37th annual film series on Wed., Feb. 6, 7:30 PM Persepolis Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi, Iran/France (2007) 96 min.

Based on the graphic novel/memoir by Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis begins in 1970s Iran, at the cusp of the Iranian Revolution which overthrew the Shah. 鈥楳arji鈥 sees her family鈥檚 dream of an Iran freed from the rule of the Shah fulfilled, but she begins to realize that post-revolution Iran, ruled by religious fundamentalists, has not been freed from authoritarianism. The story follows her to Europe, where her parents send her to study in safety, and back home again, where the imaginative Marji finds herself newly arrived into adulthood in a homeland that feels both familiar and limits her understanding of self. Co-winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Persepolis is a simply, visually evocative masterpiece about culture, nationality, and the struggles of being a young woman. A rare and welcome animated feature in our series. In French, Persian, and German with English subtitles.

鈥淟ike Art Spiegelman's seminal Holocaust-themed graphic novel Maus, this stirring film explains history from the point of view of one family.鈥 - Sandie Angulo Chen, Common Sense Media
